How to care for hardwood floors?

Hey all, we refinished our 100 year old hardwood (oak) floors when we moved into our house about 2 years ago. we put several layers of oil base polyurethane over the floors after we stained them, but this seems to be wearing off in places where drops of water have been spilled (I have a 2 year old – sippy cups get messy) even though I wipe it up right away (if I see it), and in places, the poly will just peel right up, even if no water has been spilled on it. Anyways, how do you clean hardwood floors? Moisture seems to dissolve the poly we put on. How do we get the glass-like shine back (they’re still pretty shiny, but not like when we first refinished them). If we were to refinish them again, what kind of poly should we use to make sure this doesn’t happen again (the dissolving when water spills and the peeling up of the poly in general). Also, how are you supposed to clean hardwood floors ( in the past, I have just been sweeping, b/c the poly is so fragile)? Thanks in advance

Do pergo floors hold up well?

My boyfriend and I are in the process of purchasing a condo – not too much longer until the closing date.

The whole condo is carpet excpt for the bathrooms. We really want to rip up some of the carpet and put in hard floor. Eventually we want all the carpet gone….

Our first project would be in the kitchen & dining area. The kitchen has really cheep “Peel and stick” floors, which need to be re-done…and the dining area right next to the kitchen has carpet – which we dont want in our dining area.
We looked at the Pergo floors that look like tiles…Our first big project was going to be to rip up that rug & floor and put down the pergo/fake tiles in the kitchen & dining area..

My boyfriend brings home a really good paycheck, but after the closing we’re not going to have that much money to go ahead and have real tile or real hardwood put in…. not anytime soon at least.

Just wondering how pergo floors hold up. How do you clean pergo floors??? Any experiences with pergo floors – please share.

I just had pergo type floors installed in my house?

I just had pergo type floors installed in my house, and the installer said only to use a damp wet cloth, to clean the floor, and that many other cleaners out there on the market could ruin my floor. However I have a 11 month old, and I want to be able to disinfect the floor where she plays, as I know just plain water will not do the job of cleaning. Does anyone else have this type of flooring and if so, how do you clean it? what products have you found that work??? thanks for any advice!

I knocked over a candle and it spilled all over the floor. I cleaned most of it up, but residue is left causing the floor to be slippery.
